COLOR IMAGE COMPRESSION USING ADAPTIVE VECTOR QUANTIZATION TECHNIQUE

Color has been proved to be useful information in computer vision systems since taking out the chromatic information can highly improve the accuracy of the algorithms.
Each pixel in a true color image is stored as value of Red. Green, and Blue. However, the RGB color space doesn't correspond to the perceptual attributes of the human visual system, therefore YIQ color space with components corresponding to the attributes Luminance, hue. and saturation is implemented. A common approach to the color image compression was started by transform the (RGB) image to a new color space, then applying image compression techniques, and finally retransform the results into (RGB) image .In this paper, color image compression with high compression ratio and acceptable quality of reconstructed image based on VQ technique is introduced. Moreover, adaptations have been implemented to improve the performance efficiency of VQ method. Experimental results show that the efficiency of the adaptive VQ method is better than VQ method.
