New Quality Measures for Optical Telescopes A. T. Mohammed

Abstract

Two-dimensional computer simulations are carried out to quantify the quality of optical telescopes. These simulations are studied in terms of the point spread function (psf), and the modulation transfer function (MTF) of a reference star.

From the result of these simulations, new simple quality measures are presented These measures describe the average intensity of the psf (Al), the average frequency components of the MTF (AF), full width of the psf (FP), full width of the MTF (FM), and the diffraction limited cut-off frequency as a function of telescope aperture diameter (D).

The study also presents a new simple criterion for the limitations imposed by the telescope aperture on the quality of an image of a binary star.
